The PABSEC participation in the Summer Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Strasbourg, 24-28 June 2024.

Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, took part in the Summer Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which was held in Strasbourg on 24-28 June 2024.

Mr. Theodoros Roussopoulos, President of the PACE addressed the participants. Mr. Gabrielius Landsbergis, Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Ms. Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Mr. Volker Türk, The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights delivered speeches. 

During the session, PACE elected Mr. Alain Berset (Switzerland) the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe for a five-year term starting from 18 September 2024.

During the Summer Session the following issues were discussed: “Protection of human rights for future generations”; “Strengthening democracy through participatory and deliberative processes”; “Strengthening a youth perspective in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly”; “Legal aspects of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine”; “The role of sanctions in countering the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine”; “Countering the erasure of cultural identity in war and peace”; “Reparation and reconciliation processes to overcome past conflicts and build a common peaceful future – the question of just and equal redress”; "War in Gaza: ensuring the release of the hostages, the implementation of an immediate ceasefire and provision of humanitarian aid"; "Challenges to the Democracy in Georgia."

PABSEC Secretary General Mr. Asaf Hajiyev met with PACE Secretary General Ms. Despina Hadjivasiliou-Tsovilis. The issues of holding a meeting of the Secretaries General within the framework of the Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in 2025 and a working visit of the PACE delegation to the PABSEC International Secretariat in Istanbul were discussed.
