Participation of the PABSEC in the “Enhancing Anti-Trafficking Response in the Black Sea Region” Conference, Athens, 2 December 2019

The International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS), the OSCE Special Representative and Coordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and the Office of the National Rapporteur on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, jointly organized the Conference “Enhancing Anti-Trafficking Response in the Black Sea Region”, in Athens, on Monday 2 December 2019, within the framework of the Hellenic BSEC Chairmanship-in-Office.

The PABSEC International Secretariat was represented by the PABSEC Deputy Secretary General Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis.

The conference was composed of three parts (three panels). Following an introduction into the prevailing human trafficking trends in the Black Sea region, the first panel “Overview of regional trends and challenges” placed a special emphasis on the current challenges related to the identification of trafficked victims as well as the need to adequately address child trafficking.

The second panel “Prevention of human trafficking in supply chains of public entities” elaborated on the possibilities and needs of prevention of human trafficking in supply chains of public entities, as well as some country-specific approaches to ensuring that their public procurement is sustainable and free of trafficking.

The third panel “The power of technology in combating trafficking in human beings” discussed promising practices and available technology tools to prevent and combat human trafficking, as well as debated what policies could be enacted by state institutions to address the scale of technology-facilitated trafficking in human beings.
