PABSEC Participation in the 2022 Parliamentary Hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the UN, New York, 17-18 February 2022

On 17-18 February 2022, Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General, participated in the 2022 Parliamentary Hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the UN in New York, which was attended by hundreds of parliamentarians from 65 IPU member parliaments, also by representatives of international organizations, experts and senior officials.

The two-day event was dedicated to the topic “Building Political Commitment and Inclusive Responses to Sustainable Recovery”.

Mr. Abdullah Shahid, President of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly, and Mr. Duarte Pacheco, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, addressed the Opening.

Along the four sessions were discussed such issues, as growing economic inequalities as a threat to sustainable development, building on the past to improve the future, the rights of indigenous peoples, migrants and other vulnerable groups, gender equality in decision-making, as a key to sustainable recovery, making good on climate change commitments.

During the discussions, the panelists stressed the importance of the common goals of the UN and the IPU in the framework of multilateral global cooperation, also the role of parliaments in addressing topical global issues and in implementing the UN resolutions. The need to strengthen the synergy was emphasized, especially during global crises such as pandemic and climate change.

On the sidelines of the event, the PABSEC Secretary General met with Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The two high officials discussed issues of common interest and exchanged information about the ongoing activities. Mr. Hajiyev invited Mr. Chungong to the 59th PABSEC General Assembly, to be held in June 2022.
