Participation of the PABSEC International Secretariat to the Global Virtual Conference ‘Catalysing Parliamentary Action to Fight Climate Change’, 11-12 May 2021

Mr. Miltiadis Makrygiannis, PABSEC Deputy Secretary General, attended the Global Virtual Conference titled ‘Catalysing Parliamentary Action to Fight Climate Change’, organized by the INTER PARES | Parliaments in Partnership – EU Global Project to Strengthen the Capacity of Parliaments, on 11-12 May 2021.

The conference shared best European and international practices and lessons learned on parliamentary action on climate change with INTER PARES partners and other parliaments around the world. Moreover, it exposed participants to a range of parliamentary innovations on climate change, highlighting the key areas of parliamentary responsibility, including of course legislation, oversight, representation, and the national budget.

The sessions explored the development, parliamentary scrutiny, and adoption of framework legislation to govern national responses to climate change, in the context also of international climate commitments, in particular the Paris Agreement, explored parliamentary innovation in climate policy oversight, profiling innovative approaches adopted within and beyond the European Union, and analyzed the role of Parliaments in developing approaches to climate change and environmental budgeting.

Moreover, it has been discussed the role of National Parliaments and the European Parliament in advancing the green agenda at a European level and the important role of parliamentary diplomacy in advancing international thinking on environmental protection and climate change and ensuring that national policy frameworks, and parliamentary oversight, are guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
