Parliamentary Hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the UN, the UN Headquarters in New York, 21-23 February 2018.
Parliamentary hearings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the United Nations on the theme “Towards a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration: A Parliamentary Perspective” were held on February 21-23, 2018, at the UN headquarters in New York.
The PABSEC International Secretariat was represented at this meeting by Ms. Natia Gaprindashvili, the Secretary of the Legal and Political Affairs Committee.
MPs from the member parliaments of the IPU (including all parliaments of the PABSEC), representatives of the organizations that have observer status with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as the specialized UN structures took part in the meeting.
At the opening session the participants were addressed by Mr. Miroslav Lajcak (Slovakia), President of the 72nd UN General Assembly and Mrs. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Senator of the General Congress of Mexico.
Within the framework of the meeting, such topical issues as “Migration today: main facts, agreed principles, and gaps”; “National policies and local responses: best practices and the need for coordination”; “Addressing large movements: domestic initiatives and international cooperation”; “Social cohesion and integration of migrants”; “Realizing the human rights of all migrants: a whole-of-government approach”; “Irregular and regular status: common principles and best practices”; “The political and social participation of migrants in decision-making”; “The Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and follow-up: the Role of parliaments” were discussed.
It was decided to continue the discussions within the framework of the 138th Assembly of the IPU in Geneva.
