Participation of Mr. Michael Yemelıanov, Head of the PABSEC Russian Delegation and Mr. Asaf Hajıyev, PABSEC Secretary General, in the 136th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dhaka (Bangladesh), 1 – 5 April 2017
During 1 - 5 April 2017, the PABSEC Delegation took part in the 136th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which was held in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The meeting was attended by 607 parliamentarians belonging to 126 countries, including 46 Speakers of Parliament and 36 Deputy Speakers of Parliament, from all over the world.
The PABSEC Delegation was composed by Mr. Michael Yemelianov, Head of the PABSEC Russian Delegation and Mr. Asaf Hajiyev, PABSEC Secretary General. Mrs. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh), Mrs. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and Mr. Saber Chowdhury, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, addressed the gathering at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 136th Assembly of the IPU and Related Meetings.
The theme: “Redressing inequalities: Delivering on dignity and well-being for all“ was designated as the core subject of the meeting. The participants discussed decisive actions to end the rising social, political, and economic inequalities, as well as to promote women’s access to financial resources.
During the 136th IPU Assembly,were adopted the Resolution on "The role of parliament in respecting the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of states", and the Resolution on "Promoting enhanced international cooperation on the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular on the financial inclusion of women as a driver of the development".
In the framework of the 136th Assembly of the IPU, took place the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Mrs. Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and children’s rights activist, also addressed the participants during the meeting. In a Declaration, issued at the close of the 136th IPU Assembly, the IPU Members highlighted that "extreme inequalities" come at a high cost to society,preventing economic growth, undermining the democratic process and social cohesion and increasing the risk of violence and insecurity.
On the side-lines of the 136th IPU Assembly and Related Meetings, Mr. Hajiyev had a meeting with Mr. Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The sides discussed the issues of common interest and the way of enhancing the Status of the PABSEC in the IPU. Mr. Martin Chungong invited Mr. Hajiyev to pay a visit to the IPU Headquarters in Geneva, to further discuss the cooperation between the IPU and the PABSEC.
In the course of the IPU Related Meetings, on 2 April 2017, Mr. Yemelianov and Mr. Hajiyev were invited to the Dhaka University, where they met with the high officials and students. The Dhaka University is one of the most important universities in the world and Mr. Abdul Hamid, the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is also the Chancellor of the University of Dhaka.
On this occasion, the PABSEC Delegation informed the professors and the students about the PABSEC activities and answered the various questions. Mr. Yemelianov and Mr. Hajiyev also met with Mr. Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of the Dhaka University, who awarded them with the Honorary Diplomas of this prestigious University.
