The PABSEC Delegation at the 25th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference in Riga, Latvia
The 25th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference in Riga, which was hosted by the Saeima (Parliament) of the Republic of Latvia on 28-30 August 2016, marked the silver anniversary of the BSPC establishment. At this important event, the PABSEC was represented by Mrs. Maja Gojkovic, the PABSEC President and Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, and Mr. Igor Becic, the PABSEC Vice-President, Head of the PABSEC Serbian Delegation accompanied by Mrs. Natia Gaprindashvili, the Secretary of the PABSEC Legal and Political Affairs Committee.
The Conference was addressed by Mr. Raimonds Vejonis, the President of the Republic of Latvia, Ms. Inara Murniece, the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, the Vice-President of the European Commission, as well as high representatives of Latvia and the Baltic Sea and Nordic Council institutions. Around 200 parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations, diplomatic corps, scientists, experts and other important guests participated in this gathering.
The Conference, which discussed the issues of future parliamentary cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region, quality of education, and youth unemployment, was chaired by Prof. Dr. Jānis Vucāns, the BSPC President and the BSPC Vice-Presidents.
Addressing the Conference, the PABSEC President underlined the importance of strengthening the regional dialogue as a means of promoting democracy and the rule of law and the enhancement of economic cooperation, peace and stability in the Black Sea Region and Europe at large. She particularly noted that the parliamentary cooperation, development of bilateral contacts between national parliaments and closer interaction between regional and international parliamentary assemblies paves the way towards more efficient pursuit of common goals. The PABSEC President expressed confidence for strengthening the cooperation between the two Assemblies and invited the BSPC to the 48th PABSEC General Assembly to be held in Belgrade in November 2016.
