Meeting of Mr. Asaf HAJIYEV, PABSEC Secretary General with H.E. Mr. Dimitris MARDAS, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, 24 May 2016
On 24th May 2016, Mr. Hajiyev had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Dimitris Mardas, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic in Athens.
During the discussions, the PABSEC Secretary General underlined the importance of the Declaration on “Strengthening the Status of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation” and stated that the Declaration has already been signed by the Speakers/Presidents of the Parliaments of ten BSEC Member States.
He stated that the first Declaration concerning the PABSEC Status was signed in 1993 and since that time the situation in the wider Black Sea Region has dramatically changed. For that reason, a new document has to be adopted. Besides that, Greece has joined the PABSEC after the establishment of the Assembly and the signing of that Declaration.
Mr. Hajiyev also stated that the PABSEC, because of the “related body” status, often faces problems in its attempt to cooperate with the other regional and international organizations.
He pointed his arguments in favor of the PABSEC upgrading and he underlined that PABSEC’s desire is to enhance its role, authority, effectiveness and commitment to the common cause in order to become an active player in the wider Black Sea Region.
Mr. Hajiyev stressed that the PABSEC does not wish to become an independent and autonomous body, but its main attempt is to work closely with the BSEC PERMIS, as two wings (executive and legislative) of the same body.
Mr. Dimitrios Mardas expressed the view that the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to find a solution to this issue, and in this respect, strongly supports the enhancement of cooperation in the wider Black Sea Region.
