Participation of PABSEC Secretary General Mr. Asaf Hajiyev at the Global Parliamentary Conference (GPC) of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, Washington DC, 10-12 April 2016
PABSEC Secretary General Mr. Asaf Hajiyev participated at the Global Parliamentary Conference (GPC) that was hosted by the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) at their headquarters in Washington DC on 10-12 April 2016.
The Global Parliamentary Conference (GPC) represents a unique forum of national legislators and development institutions. In line with its mission to be a platform for knowledge-sharing, the GPC, organised together with the World Bank Group (WBG) and the IMF, is the Parliamentary Network’s flagship event. It brought together more than 150 parliamentarians from 70 countries, leaders from civil society and partner organizations, and top officials from a number of international financial institutions such as the World Bank, IMF and other regional development banks.
Keynote speakers were Mrs. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF, and Mr. Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group. The meeting participated also high-level officials from the United Nations, heads of various international parliamentary organizations. The focus was on a range of issues from creating employment, stimulating economic growth, fighting climate change, gender, and good governance among others.
Secretary general delivered a speech at the parliamentary workshop on educating for the right job - building human capital. He informed participants about situation in BSEC region and expressed his vision to this problem, underlining the role of private sector in the process of opening new jobs. He stressed that the Parliaments and parliamentarians should play an important role in this process hence complicated laws create problem for their implementation and lead to corruption, and simplifying constructive legislation can bring investment to the countries. Mr Hajiyev gave the examples of the countries where these procedures have been implemented.
During his visit, Mr Hajiyev had separate meetings with Mr. Jeremy Lefroy, Chairman of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF, and Mrs. Naye A. Bathily, Head of the Parliamentary Relations and Global Engagement on the World Bank. Mr. Hajiyev informed them about PABSEC structure and the issues of common interest. He stressed the importance of facilitating and developing strong and close cooperation between the Secretariats of the PABSEC and Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In particular, it was discussed the possibility to organize joint events between the partner institutions (PABSEC – PA OSCE – PN WB – IMF). Both sides underlined an importance of such meetings.
